Apidea with virgin(?) queen |
Two mini
hives, each containing a virgin queen and some workers, have been delivered to
the woodlands at Tŷ Hyll to mate with local drones. Bees can be seen going in
and out of these small hives but has the queen mated?
We hope to find out in a
week’s time when we check to see if she has started laying eggs; this normally
happens three to four days after mating. This is highly skilled conservation
work and there is an overview of what’s being done on the
Ugly House (Tŷ Hyll) website.
If mating bees is not your thing, the
home-baked scones with jam and cream are highly recommended!
